Aptitude Testing (MLAT)

We are one of the few UK-based approved providers of the official Modern Language Aptitude Test (MLAT), which is designed to assess native English speakers’ likeliness to succeed in learning a foreign language.

MLAT is used by many western governments and international organisations to predict success in learning all basic communication skills, but particularly speaking and listening.

Since 2018, we’ve delivered online and paper based MLATs to over 600 British government officers, with our clients including the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, DIT and Home Office. Tests can be delivered in person or online with one of our experienced invigilators, and results are provided within 48 hours.

The MLAT is split into 5 sections and measures memory, auditory alertness, sound-symbol association, sensitivity to grammatical structure and rote memorisation ability, all of which are typical components of foreign language learning. The test combines reading and listening activities in gap-filling or matching multiple choice formats.

The MLAT test can be used as a recruitment tool, to assist hiring managers with appointments for foreign postings, or as a useful diagnostic tool to determine how long it may take a candidate to learn a language. Language aptitude test scores can alternatively be used to place students into groupings, where language teachers can adapt the course pace to suit the students.

The MLAT can also be used to diagnose a foreign language learning difficulty, such as dyslexia, and adaptions can be made to the learning programme to support the student in language learning.
